A heritage forged by speed
Introduced in 1969, the Heuer Monaco marked a genuine turning point in watchmaking history. The first water-resistant square chronograph watch in the world, and one of the first fitted with an automatic chronograph movement — the emblematic Calibre 11 — it immediately established itself as a groundbreaking piece. Instantly recognisable thanks to its crown positioned on the left-hand side, it pays tribute to the Principality of Monaco and its legendary Formula 1® circuit.
Worn on screen by Steve McQueen and having become a cultural as much as a watchmaking icon, the Monaco has embodied TAG Heuer’s avant-garde spirit for more than fifty years. The Monaco Speed 12 continues this lineage while propelling the model towards new heights of innovation.

The art of time at full throttle
The heart of this creation lies in its spectacular reinterpretation of the jumping-hour complication. The Monaco Speed 12 transforms the energy of a 12-cylinder engine into a true mechanical ballet. Twelve rotating pistons surround the dial and indicate the hour corresponding to each rotation of the central minute hand, offering a reading of time that is as hypnotic as it is unprecedented.
With each complete rotation of the central minute hand, a precise sequence unfolds: one piston returns to its initial position while the next performs a 90-degree rotation, revealing a previously concealed face indicating the hour. The result is a dynamic reading of time, in perpetual motion, evoking the firing sequence of a high-performance engine.
This feat rests on the automatic TH84-00 calibre, a reinterpretation of the Spin Time movement developed and patented by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. The product of the expertise of Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini, master watchmakers and founders of the manufacture, this movement expresses a dynamic vision of speed and mechanical art.
The square in the circle, a TAG Heuer signature
Crafted in Grade 5 titanium, the signature 40 mm square case frames a round movement, creating the refined duality that defines the Monaco’s aesthetic language: the square in the circle. Four openworked arches coated in black DLC suspend the movement within the case, bringing depth and transparency — hallmarks of Avant-Garde Horology pieces.
The rotating pistons, sandblasted and brushed, engraved with Arabic numerals and black-lacquered, underline the mechanical sophistication of the display. At once light and robust, the titanium case is topped with a domed sapphire crystal, also present on the back. A square sapphire bezel enhances the visibility of the pistons from every angle.
The openworked dial invites exploration of the mechanics in depth, recalling the finishes and precision of engine blocks, as if observing the inside of a supercar. The vertical grooves at the centre evoke the covers of high-performance engines, while the skeletonised central minute hand recalls dashboard instruments. A black rubber strap with a textile-embossed finish, enhanced by hand-stitched red seams, completes this resolutely sporty aesthetic.
